The guy behind Carson's Sign Shop

Hi and welcome to my shop! Writing about myself feels a bit awkward, but I’ve also read "About Me" pages written in the third person, and that feels even more impersonal. So, let me break the ice and say thank you for checking out my page! Opening this shop has been a long journey, although in hindsight, it feels like it was inevitable.
It all started when I’d visit my great-grandpa’s homemade woodshop in his garage. He used to hand me a jar of nails, a little hammer, and a block of wood. Then he'd pay me a dime for every nail I hammered in and two dimes to take them back out. He got the biggest kick out of me struggling to pull out the nails or hitting my thumb with the hammer. I can still hear his laugh and smell the sawdust.
Growing up, being creative was often seen as more of a distraction than a talent. I’d doodle in class or obsess over the latest video games and technology. Choosing to be an art major in college wasn’t a hard decision; I practically lived in the art studio and design lab. After a long bachelor’s degree journey, I took off to Yosemite to climb mountains and ended up living and working in one of the most inspiring places on Earth.
In 2014, I became the Sign Guy for Yosemite National Park. It was an incredible experience that taught me the importance of good signage for both practical use and artistic expression. When the concessionaire changed, so did my position, but the skills and inspiration I gained stayed with me.
After the pandemic shutdowns, I took on off-grid construction projects in North Carolina, where I gained hands-on carpentry experience. Then, when my grandma needed help maintaining her cabin in Camp Nelson, my fiancée and I moved to be closer to family. That’s where I purchased my first CNC router in the spring of 2024 and began carving my first signs. Friends and family loved my work, and soon, neighbors were ordering personalized signs for their homes. I started connecting with local mills to source more wood slabs and expand my offerings.
As a lifelong DIYer, I believe in keeping the craft of woodworking alive. This business is a one-person operation, built entirely by me. In a world dominated by large corporations, I think it’s important to support local economies and sustainable practices. Whenever possible, I use reclaimed or salvaged materials, turning what might have gone to the landfill into something beautiful and meaningful.
From start to finish, I strive to craft something that brings your vision to life. Whether you’re looking for a custom cabin sign, a family name plaque, or a unique piece of rustic décor, I’m here to help. Have an idea? Let’s make it happen! Send me a message, and we can create something meaningful together.
